Trends We Are Noticing November 2017

This is our monthly update to our extended Association for Creative Industries (AFCI); a more focused lens directed on what is topical and trending.
Each month I ask a group made up of designers, educators, authors and others to share their observations of trends that relate to our industry. I assemble the content and share it via my blog and through the AFCI membership email.

Here are our latest observations:

"About a year ago I started noticing a lot more wood being embedded in resin.  It looks so unique and natural.  The resin exaggerates the lines and colours and you are guaranteed a one of a kind piece.  Then I noticed the trend to add branches and other wood to small jewelry sized molds.  These are then sanded to show more of the wood.   This process is not easy and certainly, resin users know it is not a fast process.  There have been numerous how-to step by steps on this concept on blogs, Pinterest and YouTube.
Fast forward another six months and you can now order gorgeous finished pieces from China."

"Rose gold, rose gold, rose gold.  Accessories in blushy rose gold are so hot right now!"

"Acrylic Fluid Painting, Fluid Art and Acrylic Pouring are all terms for a painting trend that is capturing the attention of artists, DIYers and even modern art galleries. It's a way of creating abstract art on canvas by pouring paints so they flow and merge into each. It can be very liberating and addictive and I definitely suggest giving it a try."

"Reclaimed wood signs with stenciled or vinyl quotes continue to be popular. Add some burlap and a distressed look and you've got a winner!"
Joe Rotella

“Llama, Llama and more Llama! These animals are showing up everywhere. Crafts, Fashion and Home Decor. It's cool to be a Llama lover these days.
Don't overlook the unicorn of the sea. The Narwhal craze has only touched the surface. Expect to see these beauties reaching new limits in the New Year.
This year started with a BoHo vibe and will end in a BoHo vibe. Mixing this palette into every aspect of your creative life is a must. Being apart of the new bohemian crowd is the place to be.”

"The color Burgundy, or wine, is very hot in fashion this season....seeing it everywhere. Not my personal favorite cause it clashes with my hair  BUT, I'm buying it anyway!"
Suze Weinberg

“OMG. My latest obsession - "Ugly Bags". The weirder the better. Who would have thought you could take a transparent plastic shopping bag and call it haute couture? Do you have an Ikea bag kicking around at home? It's in fashion! I just came across  2 beauties last week : exhibit A(below): A doggie who is into some questionable extracurriculars and exhibit B (unfortunately no photo) there was a big round purse in the shape of a hot air balloon in maroon, fuchsia, and chestnut.
Psst... I'll be honest: I DID have a pic of the hot air balloon but it was so ugly I deleted it.”
